What to Expect

Cost:
The cost of any particular Quaker Center program is stated on the flyer for that program. We offer a generous sliding scale, based on our actual costs. Additional scholarships are available. Please ask if in need.

Schedule:
You may arrive any time after 4:00 p.m. on Friday to register. This will give you plenty of time to unload, move your things into your room and relax before supper, which will be served around 6:00 to 6:30 p.m.

We usually end by 2:30 after lunch, final clean-up and closing circle on Sunday.

Shared Work Responsibilities:
Participants share in kitchen chores before and after each meal. Before departure, each person is responsible for cleaning their own sleeping space, and the whole group works together to clean the entire facility. Sign-up for these jobs is done at Registration.

Meals:
Meals at Quaker Center programs are vegetarian. Quaker Center tries to make reasonable accommodations for special diets, but some individuals with highly restrictive needs may have to supplement the menu on their own.

Sleeping Accommodations:
Sleeping accommodations are first-come first-served in the Orchard Lodge (semi-private rooms near the dining hall) and are based on when your registration is received. When the Lodge is full, we will begin assigning people to the Redwood Lodge (bunk houses on the lower portion of the property). Some allowances may be made for persons with special needs.

Accessibility:
Quaker Center is a mountainous environment, but all large group spaces and most break-out rooms and bathrooms are wheelchair accessible. Quaker Center recognizes that each individual with accessibility needs is unique; we recommend that you contact us to discuss your particular situation.

What to Bring:

  • Loose comfortable clothes (good for sitting, stretching, or sitting on the floor)
  • A towel, soap, and bedding (a pillow case with either sleeping bag or sheets and blankets)
  • A flashlight is essential
  • During the winter months, rain gear is recommended
  • Warm slippers for program sessions in the Casa de Luz
  • A small throw or afghan if you tend to get chilly while sitting still
  • A cloth napkin and your own coffee mug, will help us reduce our use of electricity and disposable paper products
  • Good walking shoes for hiking
  • A small travel alarm (optional)

Pets:
Please do not bring pets. The only domestic animals allowed to be brought onto Quaker Center property by guests are certified working companions of the disabled.

Smoking:
Smoking (including the use of incense) is not allowed in any building.

Scent-Free Environment:
Quaker Center makes every effort to be a scent-free environment. Because some friends who attend our programs are made very ill by close proximity to highly scented commercial products, we ask participants to refrain from bringing or using perfumes or strongly scented soaps, deodorants, and personal care products.

Phone Use:
A public phone is available to make and receive phone calls.
