The Labyrinth at Quaker Center
In the summer of 2002, Quaker Center began construction of a permanent outdoor labyrinth, located in a secluded wooded clearing. The vision, the fundraising, and much of the labor for this project came from Tom Davis, member of Santa Cruz Friends Meeting and good friend of Quaker Center. |
|
| The labyrinth is an adaptation of the "Cretan" design, an older and simpler version than the more elaborate design used in the Chartres Cathedral in France and Grace Cathedral in San Francisco.
The Quaker Center labyrinth is about 50 feet in diameter and contains seven cycles. Layed out upon a foundation of local mountain granite from the Santa Cruz quarry, the paths are lined with smooth river rock. The labyrinth is available around the clock to all Quaker Center users. Members of the general public who would like to visit and walk the labyrinth are asked to call the Quaker Center office (831-336-8333) to insure that they will not be disturbing groups who are already on the property.
